Although often referred to as “alphabet soup,” professional designations play an important role in one’s professional career while adding value to the organization they represent. An employee desiring to work toward a designation shows their employer that they are serious about education, and committed to growing professionally while improving the quality of their organization.

Earning the Designation is Only Half the Battle
Using the tools and resources they’ve been given to enhance the quality of advice and service given to their client is the other half. Certifications are earned from a professional society and need to be renewed periodically. Many times, more than one designation is earned, which requires maintaining expertise in more than one field.

Beware of Canned Designations
Not all designations require an examination. Some can be earned by simply attending a series of classes and paying a fee to join a professional society. Others can be obtained through online study without the practical classroom application. Be sure to ask questions before assuming someone with a designation is an expert and has experience in their field.
