Handling Auto Claims Correctly

Handling claims is the most important part of our service to the auto policyholder.

When making a claim it is important to remember a few necessary steps that will help you get your auto claim handled quickly.

First, call the police. They will act as a mediator between both parties and can help identify fault. A police report can be more valuable than your statement to the company.

Second, when exchanging information with the other party, be sure to obtain their name, address, and phone number, as well as the other parties’ insurance company and policy number. Give the same information to the other party. Do not discuss coverage as it could be used against you in a law suit.

Don’t Wait to Call
Next, it is important to notify FIFS, or the company directly, as soon as possible after a claim. Be sure to report all accidents, even if the police say it is non-reportable. The term non-reportable only applies to the police report, not your insurance. It simply means the vehicles were not towed from the scene and there were no injuries.

Also, witnesses can be a very important factor in your auto loss. Be sure to obtain the name, addresses, and phone number of any witnesses. Many times the outcome of the loss can be determined when a witness has come forward.

If your loss is determined to be the fault of the other party and you want to have the other insurance company pay for your damage, be aware that it could take some time for the other company to obtain copies of police reports and to speak to their policyholder. This could extend the time they take to respond to your loss. If they accept your claim, they would be responsible for your vehicle damage as well as towing and rental reimbursement. You should always ask about what they will allow for your rental, towing, and storage so you will not have any surprises.

Finally, if you are injured because of an auto accident, your medical bills, transportation to hospital and emergency room care, etc. will be paid up to the limits that you have chosen under you own auto policy. When filling out your hospital information, be sure to give your auto carrier information so the company will be billed for your services.

Remember, when you loan your vehicle to another driver the insurance follows the vehicle. If your vehicle is in an accident, the car repair and personal liability will fall back under your policy.
