Clients often ask how their personal auto policy responds outside of the United States, mainly Canada. Most auto policies define the policy territory as the United States of America, its territories or possessions, Puerto Rico, or Canada. This simply means that the coverage on your policy will apply while traveling within these territories, whether you’re driving your own car or if you decide to rent a car. So remember, if you are traveling or renting a vehicle outside of the defined territory, you also need to purchase insurance through the rental agency.

Do I Need Proof of Insurance?
The US Department of State suggests that you ask your agent for a Canada card. This card simply proves that you carry the minimum amount of liability required by Canadian law on your auto insurance policy. Although not required to cross the border, Canada cards are simply piece of mind should you have an accident while traveling. Canada cards are temporary, reflecting your current policy period. Please call FIFS at 267-384-5300 prior to your trip if you wish to obtain a Canada card.
Will I Need a Passport?
According to the US Department of State web site, currently all persons traveling by air between the US and Canada are required to provide a U.S. passport. The United States will be requiring passports to re-enter the country sometime in 2008 for those persons traveling by car. It can take 6 to 8 weeks to receive a new passport, so be sure to start the process several months prior to your trip. You can also pay for expedited services to speed the process, but they can be a costly alternative.
Please call FIFS at 267-384-5300 prior to any major trip outside the continental United States to discuss your temporary insurance needs while on vacation.
